The Great Tower of the Deanery Church

Rising above the picturesque rooftops of Písek’s historic centre, the Great Tower of the Dean’s Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is one of South Bohemia’s most iconic Gothic landmarks. Built in 1489, the tower originally served as a municipal watchtower, constructed on a square base measuring 10 × 10 metres.

Soaring to a height of 72 metres, the tower has become an enduring symbol of the town. Visitors can ascend its 210 wooden steps to reach the viewing gallery at 42 metres, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of Písek and the surrounding countryside.

Along the way, you’ll encounter several unique historical features. The interior preserves original wooden beam structures from the 15th century, and a small chamber – once the home of the tower watchman – now houses a fully functional mechanical clock. This mechanism powers the hands of four large clock faces, each oriented toward a different cardinal direction.

The tower is also home to four modern bells with a total weight of 3.3 tonnes. These were cast in 1991–1992 by renowned Czech bell-maker Marie Tomášková-Dytrychová.

At the very top of the tower, a metal capsule containing restoration documents is sealed beneath a two-metre-high cross, completing the tower’s distinctive silhouette.

Due to the limited number of participants per tour, we recommend reserving your visit in advance at the Tourist information centre Písek.
