The Písek Stone Bridge
(Kamenný Most)

This national cultural monument was undoubtedly built together with the town by order of the king before the end of the 13th century. It is therefore at least half a century older than the famous Charles Bridge in Prague and is only surpassed in age in Central Europe by the bridge in Regensburg in Bavaria.

The jewel of Písek was built from stone blocks, some of which still bear the old stonemason's marks. The structure has seven arches, is 111 metres long and was equipped with defensive towers at both ends, which are no longer preserved today. 18th century Baroque sculptures of St. John of Nepomuk with angels, St. Anne, St. Anthony of Padua and Calvary were added to the railings.

The bridge has been threatened by floods several times, and during the last flood in August 2002 it was completely submerged by the waters of the stormy Otava River, which swept away the railing and one of the angels and damaged the bridge deck. Thanks to a public collection, the bridge was soon renovated and today you can enjoy an undisturbed view of Písek from here.

The bridge is freely accessible all year round.
