House at the Elephant
Located directly opposite the entrance to the historic Stone Bridge, the House at the Elephant stands on a site of strategic importance. In medieval times, this spot marked the location of the Prague Gate—one of the three main entrances to the walled town—where guards once lived.
The current building is a classicist burgher house, constructed around 1824. Its name comes from the elephant figure displayed on its façade, one of the many traditional house signs preserved in Písek. Since 1982, the house has been owned by art historian Dr. Stach Černín, who has transformed the first floor into a space filled with artworks from various periods and styles.
The house is undergoing gradual restoration, and cultural events are occasionally held in its garden—an atmospheric space that once formed part of the town’s defensive moat.
