Historic House Signs in Písek

Before house numbers were introduced in 1770, homes in Písek—like elsewhere in Europe—were identified by unique names or symbols rather than numbers. These signs often reflected the owner’s name, profession, or an important event, and were proudly displayed as painted images, frescoes, sculptures, or even physical objects affixed to the façade.

Písek is especially fortunate in having preserved many of these historic house signs, which can still be seen on the town’s buildings today. Behind you at the end of Karlova Street stands a house marked with a sculpted golden boat. More examples can be found around Velké náměstí, including the House of St. Anne, the Three Crowns, the Gold Bell, and the Red Crayfish.

One of the most distinctive symbols is The Elephant, located at the end of Karlova Street opposite the Stone Bridge. As you explore the town, keep an eye out for more: on Drlíčov Street, you’ll find houses named At the White Lamb, At the Silver Denarii, At the Balls, and At the Golden Ball.

These charming markers are a delightful window into the town’s past and a reminder of Písek’s rich civic and artistic tradition.
