Bridges of Písek

The town of Písek, home to around 30,000 residents, boasts an impressive network of eight bridges crossing the Otava River. The most iconic of these is the 13th-century Stone Bridge (Kamenný most)—the oldest preserved stone bridge in the Czech Republic and a national cultural monument.

In addition to this medieval treasure, the town features several newer bridges. The so-called “New Bridge” was built in 1941, and the Jirásek Bridge connects the northern part of the town. In the western area, two larger bridges primarily serve road and railway transport.

Písek is also home to three pedestrian bridges (footbridges). The oldest of these crosses the Municipal Island. Another modern footbridge links to the Portyč housing estate. The newest addition is the striking Dagmar Šimková Footbridge, opened in 2018, which spans the Wenceslas Weir and connects two historic quarters of the town.

Beyond the city limits, two nearby bridge structures are also of interest to visitors: the Zátavský Bridge located upstream on the Otava River, and the “Gas Footbridge” (Plynová lávka), which follows the river and offers scenic walking and cycling routes.
